The Artifact of the Astral Valley is an interactive installation I created with my friend and creative collaborator Hayden Carey for the Currents New Media 2023 Art and Technology Festival. The Artifact is an ancient and overgrown contraption. Upon discovery, a mechanical iris opens and reveals a digital display. The living machine comes alive and the discoverer is encouraged to learn more about the technological relic, unveiling glimpses of the ancient civilization that developed it.
Through digitally generative images, sound, and kinetic sculpture, the piece invites guests to think about the relationship humans have with the natural world and the effect of time in this relationship.
In addition to creative concepting and project management, I took on the mechanical, structural and sculptural parts of this project while my collaborator Hayden Carey worked on the generative digital art, creative coding and electrical work. I used Fusion360 to design the mechanical aperture mechanism and used a variety of digital fabrication methods to bring the piece to physical reality.
The project ran for 8 days at the Currents New Media Festival in Santa Fe during June of 2023. We later installed the installation and the Mesa por Vida Festival in Santa Fe later that summer.
